Connect2 technology in higher education helps address skills gap
Connect2 equipment booking software is supporting achievement of learning outcomes in broadcast engineering and production degrees, at a time when more graduates are needed to fill an industry skills gap. New functionality in connect2 helps students borrow more comprehensive kit lists of equipment for projects from university lending schemes via a simple checkout and return process. The improved access helps build familiarity with using industry-standard equipment – an important requirement for beginning broadcasting careers.
With the new functionality, additional resources to a student’s self-service equipment booking can be added at checkout with some key checks in place. Crucially, it highlights the choice of return times which align with existing project deadlines. With these options listed, technicians have more opportunity to advise students on additional items of equipment required for their projects while keeping the lending arrangements as straightforward as possible.
The improved efficiencies and communications that come with using connect2 software enable students to enjoy a better experience of borrowing and using media equipment while at university. It also vastly improves availability of items to students, for better resourced degree programmes.
Use of connect2 software is now in place in over 100 higher education institutions – a milestone reached in 2018.
The skills gap in broadcast engineering is thought to have been fuelled by a shift in production from publicly funded broadcasters to independent production companies. This has seen a greater reliance on freelancers and less resource available for training. Getting engineers ready for a career in broadcasting has increased the opportunity and responsibilities placed on universities as a result.
Anna Crilly, Managing Director at Lorensbergs, creators of the connect2 software, comments: “The flexibility and communications provided by connect2 have been developed in partnership with our university customers to make the most of their investments in cameras and other media equipment. Connect2 is designed to promote usage of these resources, helping students build skills for future careers in broadcasting and media.”
Further information is available from Lorensbergs at the BVE media technology show, February 26-28, on stand K52.
