Latest survey evidences the critical value of libraries’ daily work

Libraries are providing key skills development and support to their users on a daily basis, with footfall rising as the pandemic subsides. These are the findings from the latest public library survey from netloan which captures the experiences of 80 UK customer library authorities.

Published by netloan library software provider, Lorensbergs, the results highlight some vital outcomes of how libraries support their users. On all or most days, libraries are offering the following value:

• 83% develop users’ digital skills
• 78% enable users to complete homework or studies
• 77% help find new jobs
• 74% make benefit applications possible
• 73% ensure users stay socially connected
• 68% support use of other Government services
• 63% help achieve money savings
•  42% keep users safe online
• 41% improve users’ health literacy
• 37% support UK citizenship applications
• 25% help new businesses get started

Footfall is indicated at reaching nearly 70% of pre-Covid levels, up 20% on the previous year. Digital skills support is in demand and nearly half of libraries are seeing requests rising further. The People’s Network of library computers and the support of library staff remain essential to meeting these needs.
